In case there are folks not familiar with these brand names, these drugs are
antidepressants.
Karyn, I would be concerned about these high doses, and the long term use.
Baby will be exposed over a long term, I presume. I'm not at work today, so
don't have my Hale books handy, however, I would look them up of course, and
see what the mothers in the studies were taking. See what the potential
effects on the baby would be. Remember, any CNS drug is a bit worrisome. I'm
not saying the mother should not bf, I would just take it a bit further than
say a mother on a low dose of zoloft (sertraline). I would share with the
mother my research, and discuss with her how we could work with it. Does she
need to continue both drugs? Does she need to continue at those doses? When
baby is born, is baby term? well? These are all factors. Is she under the
care of a psychiatrist? Surely she is since she's been on this for 8 yrs.
The moher should be informed of what to watch for in her baby, as far as
potential side effects and perhaps the baby could be monitored at intervals
for drug levels. As an aside, if your research reveals that this is a high
dose, in fact, you may want to contact Dr. Hale, with mom's permission, and
arrange for some lab work to be done, in mom and baby, so that we would all
have info on this in future.
