Sarah, please don't quit reading!  I know you have to care for your little guy, but we're all learning a mountain from you!

I do want to add another thought to the mix about the getting consent:

I didn’t sign the consent with my 2nd and 3rd because I had no intention of having an epidural.  As you said, in case of an emergency, consent is implied.

I was told when I checked out, that had I signed that form, I (my insurance) would have been charged $1500 for having the anesthesiologist "on call."  

Those kids are now 23 and 25, but it's worth looking into what's happening on the billing procedures today if we want to see the whole picture.
