Subject: [LACTNET] breastfeeding triggering diarrhea

I have a mother of a 2 week old baby. No trouble with actual feeding but it
seems that every time she starts to breastfeed, she has diarrhea. She states
that when she used to have periods, her bowel motions would be loose with
some urgency also. Is there any connection?

**Hello Catherine,

I would think of a sensitive reaction to her (extra high?) oxytocine levels.
Oxytocine rises with the MER and also has contraction effects on the musle
tissue in the intestines, where it is responsible for peristalsis. I don't
know about a connection with her periods, but maybe the same story there?
When the womb contracts to expel the unnecessary build-up, oxytocine may be
lurking as well...?
