Hi:

This is in response to my request for help with mom with forceful MER.  I 
appreciate all your responses and promise to keep you updated.  The one 
suggestion I forgot to post is that I did suggest to the mom that she take the 
baby off breast as she felt strong MER and just let milk spray for a few 
minutes before putting baby back on.  She may have to do that each time or 
with just the first MER.

She reported back to me that she was not thrilled with that advise as she felt 
it would upset baby.  My answer to her was that I agreed, however, baby 
may be lots less angry in a short period of time if this did, in fact, help

I received 4 responses and 3 all said the same thing with regards to taking 
baby off and letting milk spray.  I have saved these posts and I deleted the 
names and any other info except for a first name and I sent it to mom.  I felt 
it would be helpful to read about other experienced LC's who either 
experienced this themselves and/or worked with other moms who did.  I thank 
you all so much as I expect this will help sway her.

She sent me an email later today that at peds visit, she was told baby has 
GERD and that blood in spit up was because of too much acid.  She was given 
a script and was told to pump and bottlefeed for a day and to eliminate 
dairy.   Mom said she came to a compromise with peds.  She took the script 
and will thnk about it.  She will also think about eliminating dairy as well as 
bottling.  I think she is leaning towards bottling as breastfeeding has become 
very anxiety producing for mom as she watches her baby get so upset.  Mom 
asked me what I thought.

I answered her with what I prefaced with as being my professional opinion and 
she will need to take this info into consideration as she balances what her 
doctor advised.

My thoughts:

What is the doctors intention with bottlefeeding?  To reduce reflux and its 
side affects.  If it truly is reflux baby will continue whether he is bottlefed 
breastmilk or formula.

If the intention is to see if baby has dairy allergies, he will continue to have 
symptoms whether he is fed breastmilk or formula from bottle- assuming she 
gives cows milk. 

If baby does have suck/swallow/breathe problems it will be there with bottle 
and breast.

My opinion is that if we say that all the above are not the issues, and baby 
does beautifully with bottle, it is more of an MER thing, which will still not be 
solved with bottles.  And Pumping and bottling may very well up her 
production. 

If she switches to bottles for a full day or so, baby may begin to show a 
strong preference to bottle.  This will make breastfeeding more difficult.

I am waiting for moms reply.  I saw  her last Friday and when we communicate 
via email I will suggest a follow-up so that  I can evaluate baby's 
swallowing/breathing.
