I can't remember how old this baby is that is boing discussed...but several
years ago we had a baby with very slow gain that was mildly to moderately
jaundiced as well. Then one day I walked by the scale as the mom was doing
a drop-in weight on her own and the baby was GREEN. I felt her abdomen and
the liver was huge. I sent her straight to her primary care provider...and
she was diagnosed with biliary atresia at about 6 weeks. She had a Kasai
procedure, and parents were told she would need a transplant soon...but last
I knew she was 4 years old and doing very well.
I attributed the relatively late diagnosis to the breastmilk.
If this baby is at all yellow, this would be a possibility. The baby wouold
not gain despite good intake.
