I had several phone calls and 4 outpatients yesterday - and the theme of
these revolved around different theories of child raising. One mom gave
me a list of books she was reading. Finally, I told them all: I
recommend a really good book for you to read. It's kind of expensive,
and you might not understand it all completely, but it's the best book
in the world. What is that book? Your baby! Read your baby. No one
can know your baby like you. If you don't pick up the book, you won't
read it. If you don't know all the vocabulary, read it in context - you
will learn what it means! You may have to read the same thing over and
over again before you understand it. Sometimes you won't understand
what you read completely until you've finished the book! Sometimes you
might have to ask someone else what a word or two means, but in general,
you will learn.
As a mother and now a grandmother, (and an avid reader!) this means
something to me.
Now, what if you never learned to read in the first place? You can
still learn, all you have to do is WANT to learn. I know several adults
who didn't learn to read until later in life. It's not a value
judgment!
What do you think of my analogy?
