A big thank you to all who sent suggestions of topics to discuss in an upcoming nurses training! I am a huge fan of Diane W. and "Watch Your Language". I strive to speak in a way that makes mothering at the breast seem as it truly is..the normal way to feed a baby. However, the hospital has already told me that they estimate 15-20% of their new moms breastfeed, even once! Soooo...here is the difference between something being normal, natural and being a "common" occurance, which obviously here it is not. How can I present the good things about breastfeeding without using words like "advantages", "best", "ideal", etc. You get the idea. It's so frustrating to still see these words in even the most accepted handouts these days. I just want to convey that feeding a baby this way is NORMAL. Is it acceptable to say "benefits of breastfeeding"? Or is this still implying something too difficult or challenging for the average mom to attempt? I realize that the flip side of the "benefits" line of thinking is to present a list of the dangers of ABM. Of course I know these dangers are very real but this community would probably throw me out on my ear if I go that route. After all, 80-85% of their new moms can't be endangering their infants, right??!! I don't live in this community, and I want to be invited back, so what can I say? As you can tell, I am a real word freak! I'd really like to present it in the right way, as I believe that the unspoken language or implications are often more important than what I say or use in powerpoint. Any suggestions??
