Hello everyone!
I have been lurking on Lactnet for a little while now and have learned tons
of stuff. This is truly a wonderful place to get lots of great info. I
really love it!
Here is my question: I am a new LC (certified last year) without a position
at my hospital. I work as an RN, BSN in the nursery and the post-partum
unit. I do LC related tasks on the side like being part of our
Breastfeeding comity, working on the Baby friendly initiative, teaching part
of the 20 hour course at the provincial level, promoting breastfeeding week,
etc. At our last meeting yesterday for the breastfeeding comity, we
discussed the use of pain medications for labor and after in the post-partum
unit. We realized that ALL mothers are offered the same options wether they
are planning to breastfeed or not. One of our comity member said that the
choices had been revised and looked at to make sure that they were safe with
breastfeeding or at least that they offered the least amount of side
effects. We then realized that this wasn't so since Demerol in one of our
biggest option and then we have epidurals which contains either Fentanyl or
Morphine. We have one Gynecologist in particular that is really big on
Demerol and often prescribes it as routine analgesia for our cesariean
mothers.
What I am looking for is a few good articles that would persuade him that
Demerol is not the best choice and maybe even a few that might point him to
better options. I looked in the archives but haven't really found what I
was looking for. Can anyone help me?
Thank you so much!
