Dear DR. Wight,

Thank you for all the links about breastmilk acquired Strep B mastitis. Of
course as a LC, it causes me to be concerned about telling moms to
breastfeed when they have mastitis. I have always told moms to take their
antibiotics and continue to feed on the affected side. This mom was on
antibiotics x 7 days plus two in the hospital IV antibiotics. Is this something
to be concerned about for the normal healthy newborn. Is this so rare that
nobody talks about it. And then the fact that breastmilk antibodies supresses
GBS in breastmilk. This mom was told not to nurse her second baby. I"m sure
she won't because this baby went on to get menimgitis and has 80% brain
loss. Unable to lift head.
Does smile, but not too much to communicate with. My heart aches for this
family. I don't personnally know them. I took care of the affected baby's
mom's sister. She told me the story, as she was seeking help for her healthy
baby boy who was a bit overfed, gassy green stools, she had enough milk for
2 kids. Needed to fix latch to asymettric. So much milk, he could never just
nurse. It was a battle gulping and sputtering and how distended his tummy
was. He had gained a full pound by 8 days post partum. She was pumping
and breastfeeding around the clock. Anyway, how to handle this delicately,
without hurting the cause. Just how rare is this. I'm sure a lot of LC's were
not even aware this could happen.
