I was not shocked to see that Mead Johnson funded the CD-ROM part of the
NRP coursebook. Its actually a great interactive, learning tool and they
picked the best place for their brand name placement. CHeck out the PDF
attached and you can see the CD-ROM description(about 4rth page) and it
mentions Mead Johnson Funding was provided.
A few years ago teaching BF class, I would hand out paperback copies of the
AAP's Guidelines to Sucessful Breastfeeding. Then I would ask everybody to
notice the cute little bear with blanky that was almost waving up at us from
the center, bottom front cover. That is the Similac Bear, Ross Laboratories
funded the printing of these books.
And then I would ask them, Why? Why would a Multi-Billion dollar formula
company actually fund the publication of our American Academy of Pediatrics
Breastfeeding Guide???
In other words, What is in it for them to do so??
Usually a great discussion would ensue about conflict of interest, follow the
money, etc.
So- thanks Similac- I got a great BF discussion topic off ya!
