Top of my list would be at least recliners, if not adult beds, in special
care bay. I would also ensure that cribs can be reached from both sides so
that mothers and nurses don't get in one another's way. Private rooms for
parents to stay/room-in. Lockers to keep parents belongings safe. Purpose
built breastpump storage at the bedside to make it easy to S2S and pump
simultaneously at the bedside. A small refridgerator, sink and sterlizing
unit in each bay would mean that mum doesn't ever have to leave the bedside
(and communicates clearly that she is expected to stay and is an important
part of the baby's recovery). Full bathroom facilities for mothers (no one
who has just given birth wants to share a bathroom - especially with other
mothers who have also just given birth.
Computer terminals (or PDA wireless access) in every L&D room - so that
babies don't have to be separated from mothers for data entry. Queen size
beds in L&D and on postnatal to encourage families to stay together. Deep
baths in the ensuites to L&D. You definitely want a classroom (at least) and
I suggest that it be a double room with the second area set up as a play
room for sibs (not all babies are the first) - that can be seen from the
classroom.
