Barb,

I don't work in a hospital, but was frustrated recently when I needed a
procedure and was told to "pump and dump" by the surgeons but not told which
drugs would be used to anesthetize/sedate me (I had my Hale right there for
reference). Instead, they sent me to the anesthesia people, who were
actually quite lovely, bringing me the actual bottles of the stuff that goes
in the Ivs, etc. I spent over an hour with them, sharing the Hale book and
discussing what I know (from conferences) about medicine and mothers' milk.

With that, we collectively jotted down the following, which they promised to
keep on hand to share with other nursing mothers:

Names of the drugs
Hale rating and description
Alternative options for L3 and above, or discussion of age of baby,
frequency of nursing, etc. for L3 and above
Brief discussion of whether any drug actually gets to baby and how

This is what I would include on a handout, because in most cases, pumping
and dumping isn't necessary, except to relieve engorgement if mother is
going to be separated from her baby by choice (to rest or recover or because
she can't hold baby).
