I know that the discussion on SOP has been requested to end her however, the
NYLCA Board wants to share our action - this letter was sent to IBCLE this
morning.

To the members of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners:
On behalf of the New York Lactation Consultant Association
(NYLCA), the Executive Board of NYLCA respectfully but firmly requests that
in light of recent issues raised about the Scope of Practice as it now
appears on the IBCLE website, this Scope of Practice be removed immediately
until significant revisions are discussed and agreed upon by your Board. As
it stands, the Scope of Practice does not adequately represent the expertise
of our profession or allow us to work at our own certified level of
competency or ethics as an important but respectful part of a mother and
baby's health care team. We are already aware of situations where a health
care provider has claimed that the mother's IBCLC cannot provide her with
evidence-based information if it does not agree with the health care
provider since "IBCLCs are not allowed to contradict health care providers
according to the Scope of Practice" as it reads now. This is a great loss
for families, and puts IBCLCs at great risk if they attempt to work within
their own codes of ethics and competency. This cannot stand. Please remove
this Scope of Practice, effective immediately, until it can both empower and
guide IBCLCs back to the high level of effectiveness we did have and should
continue to have.
Sincerely,
Leigh Anne O'Connor, IBCLC
NYLCA President
