I meet a lot of new moms with various wrist problems but none have been
advised to wean. Perhaps all the hormonal changes put them more at risk (I
don't know) but usually the more immediate cause is improper mechanics. A
visit with a PT would help the mom understand what movements to avoid
(ideally have PT come to home to watch how she's handling the most common
daily activities). Did you happen to watch her breastfeeding? It helps to
find a way to hold the baby with wrist straight and, ideally, arms totally
relaxed. Lifting baby by hitching thumbs into axillae is a big no-no for
these moms. Some moms use wrist brace till out of worst sx.
Cheers,

I work at Mothers' Milk Bank. A donor (who gave me permission to
post) told me she is being counseled that she might need to stop
breastfeeding in order for her severe tendonitis in her wrist to heal. (Her
baby is about 4 months old.) The idea seems to be that higher prolactin
levels can prevent healing. Hmmm. I really doubt this. Any thoughts?
