I have made visits to many mothers from many different cultures - but I just
visited a mom from Jordan (a Muslim) whose mother sent her a wrap to "make
sure he has a straight back". This baby had not only the wrap we usually
see among our Mexican moms (about 3 inches wide and very long so the baby is
wrapped around and around "to keep the belly button in"), he also had over
this another wrap that also was very long - but about 9 inches wide - and
when wrapped around and around the baby he was kept very straight - so that
he couldn's "wrap" around mom as we often see - he was straight!
The temperatures here in California are VERY hot - and the home had no
airconditioning, so I suggested that mom leave these off "until it gets
cooler" ( she may interpret that as TONIGHT - I'd rather she interpreted
that as DECEMBER!). She agreed, but said her mom had sent very strict
instructions. We left it as "you may want to think this over and decide
what YOU think is better for your baby". (I had asked if this was
religious-based vs. her mom's or town's culture and she denied it being
religious.)
As this baby IS having troubles with milk tranfer, IS clutching, clenching
and in general a very "tight" baby, what are your thoughts, O wise women
from all over the world???
