I have permission to post.
I am working with a mother of a 9 week old baby. Baby has been nursing well, and mother is very committed to breastfeeding, having b'fed her first child for 15 mos.  Mom has been taking the progestin-only mini-pill.   

Mom is still shedding lochia at 9 weeks postpartum.  She went for an exam with her CNM, and all checked out well, no placental fragments, no discomfort  Her CNM recommended taking a low-estrogen combo pill to see if that would finish off the bleeding. Mom is concerned about how this might effect her supply, and if it does effect it negatively, would adding pumping to the equation help regain/maintain a full supply?

I read her the section on Hormonal Birth Control out of the BAB, 3rd ed. which, summarized, said that estrogen-containing bc could effect milk supply and to watch for any changes, as well as consider waiting until babe is at least 6 mos old so that solids may be begun and breastmilk was not the only source of nutrition. I told mom I would seek the experience/advice of LACTNET for further information.

Any ideas?
