I took a day off from my computer yesterday and just read about 8 digests.
In one there was a mention of a new product for measuring alcohol
concentration in breastmilk with an indicator strip akin to those used on
urine, that would tell mothers whether their milk had 'too much' alcohol in
it to give to the baby.

It would be interesting to know what the threshold level is, and how it was
arrived at.

Even with that information, I can not envision a situation in which I'd
recommend using the gadget. If I were working with a mother who regularly
drank so much that her milk might pose a health hazard to her baby, I bet I
would have reported her to child protective services for neglect, because I
don't think you can be an adequate parent at that level of inebriation.

I've said it many many times before; the problem with drinking when you have
a young baby is not the alcohol in the milk. It's the effect of alcohol on
your level of consciousness, reaction time, and judgment. Babies deserve to
have at least one responsible, legally sober adult in their surroundings at
all times. Interesting that we worry more about who is going to drive home
from the party, than who is going to be there for the children.

OTOH perhaps we should be cheered that there are now so many breastfeeding
mothers in the US that someone sees the launching of this device as a good
business prospect.

Feeling like an old-time teetotaler, which I am not,
