Just got a call from our hospital dietician. The clinic has an adorable 15- month old child with severe food allergies (eggs, dairy, wheat, corn, soy, oats and several legumes). Child is under the 5th percentile for weight, and at 20% for length. The problem: dental caries. Child wakes up 3 times per night to nurse, and cosleeps with mom. Dentist and Pediatrician both are asking mother to wean the child at night to prevent worsening of the dental caries and to hopefully promote better eating of solids during the day (this child nurses frequently, all day long, as well).

Nobody is recommending this child completely wean - it is realized that breastmilk is probably saving this child's life due to all of the allergies - but the night nursing is being recommended to stop.

I suggested mom continue to nurse at night, wiping the child's teeth off after every nursing. Dietician tells me they have tried this, but it is a huge battle every time.

Any suggestions?? Thanks.
