Hello old wise ones! I haven't posted in a while but enjoy reading what has
been happening. My question is regarding nipple shields. When I started at
our hospital nipple shields were not allowed due to some problems which had
happened in the past. Some of the nurses had started using bottle nipples
instead. I brought nipple shields back because I felt that they can be a
very useful tool when used appropriately. When I did this I also had
patient's sign a consent so they were aware of the risks, that it was not a
permanent solution and the need for follow up. I know people have mixed
feelings about utilizing a consent but I felt that I needed some mechanism
to ensure the patient's were educated and not handed a tool and told "to
try this." So here is my question: Are other facilities using a consent for
this and if not how are you making sure follow up is occuring and the
patient education is being done? What is the legalities of not having
informed consent and something happening?
Any information would be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Kim
