I am currently consulting with a mum and her 5 week old baby, who has been diagnosed with tetralogy of fallot. Surgery will be carried out when the baby is bigger and older. This mum is an experienced breastfeeding mother with the baby being fully breastfed. However, the baby is gaining small amounts only (300 gms since birth), is a very unsettled baby and can only breastfeed for short spells before coming off and fussing. There seems to be no obvious reason for this fussing which is very distressing for all concerned.

The supply, latch and milk transfer are all O.K.

This baby does not seem to enjoy feeding and cannot be comforted at the breast which is not helping the growht needed before the baby can have surgery.

Any suggestions, wise ones out there?
