A group of LCs, nurses, doctors, LLLLs and others are beginning
efforts to establish a non-profit, community milk bank in the Boston
area which will serve hospitals and families in New England. We are
working with HMBNA and under HMBANA guidelines and we are in process
of establishing partnerships with local and regional breastfeeding
organizations including LLL, Mass. Breastfeeding Coalition, BACE/
Nursing Mothers' Council, Mass. Lactation Consultant Association, and
others.

Establishing the Mothers' Milk Bank of New England is a multi-stage
process. The first steps include education and creating a demand for
banked milk . Although the first milk bank in the country was
established here in Boston almost 100 years ago, there is little
recent experience in Boston and most of New England using banked milk
for NICU and other compromised babies. We are working to educate the
medical and lay communities about the use of banked milk when
mothers' own milk is not available.

Other immediate goals are becoming a non-profit organization and
raising funds for education and to be able to help hospitals obtain
banked milk from other milk banks for now.

There is much energy and excitement about the emerging Mothers' Milk
Bank of New England. There is also much work to do to see it become a
reality. Anyone who is interested in learning more and becoming
involved, please contact me so you can be kept informed of meetings
and progress and you can find the best way to contribute to our
effort. Please help us spread the word, pass this message on to
anyone else you think may be interested.

Looking forward to hearing from many of you and to sharing good news
as we progress.
