we have several different nursing programs in our area who have clinicals
at our hospital (BFH). the nursing students have at least 2 full days with
the LC as part of their OB rotation (in addition to antepartum, L&D, and
postpartum). this includes a shift with the rounds LC who sees the
inpatients and teaches the daily BF and baby care class for parents to
attend before d/c, and a day at the postpartum care center, following the
LC for about 5 or 6 appts usually when baby is 3-4 days old, and sometimes
even a day with the breastfeeding center appts. if they have down time in
the clinic (cancelled appts, etc) we encourage them to sit in the phone
room with that LC listening and learning. one day the student assigned to
follow me (doing rounds) was absent from clinical due to illness, so her
instructor shadowed me all day and told me she learned so much. it was
wonderful!

("enjoying" the 26th consecutive day of rain here in the Seattle area,
only 7 days to go to break the previous "record")
