Diane, I know we have discussed collection kits on Lactnet before. It is 
always an interesting topic! The types of tubing that are open systems tend 
to allow condensation into the tubing. Then it grows mold or bacteria which 
can travel down to the expressed milk because the air circulates between the 
tubing and the bottle.

The types of tubing that are closed systems (and usually have a barrier to 
anything going up the tubing) do not have these problems. One reason is the 
barrier to the tubing and the other is that air doesn't circulate between 
the pieces.

Well, this is my understanding of the issue.

Of major importance are the new guidelines from the Human Milk Banking 
Assoc. of North America where they recommend that all women pumping for NICU 
babies use a closed tubing system so that the tubing stays clean.
