Dear Annette,
2 years ago I made animated GIF where baby latches in the cradle hold
http://users.iptelecom.net.ua/~vylkas/kinolatch.html
This is the same technique with thumb near the nipple.
I am thinking about making animation of latching baby when all fingers are
placed far away from the nipple and of some variant of bad latch.

I think that when making a latch animation we should give mom some time to
absorb new visual information by making some pause after showing one
latching sequence; I included some frames with suckling movements after the
baby latched for this purpose. If we show only the moment of latch, the
animation (imho) rotates too quickly.

My practice is not very large but I found that some moms are more
comfortable with this nipple-tilting technique, and some others can latch
their babies better when all fingers are placed far away from areola. I
observed that technique when thumb on the areola work best in moms with
rather large and elongated nipples (and in some moms with flat nipples too).
Moms with rather small nipples (but not inverted) had better success with
latch technique that was depicted in the Bestfeeding (when mom simply hold
baby very-very close, nose to the nipple and when baby gapes, aims nipple
into the roof of baby mouth).

Sincerely yours,

Subject: Question on latch animation?

I watched the animation of the latch. Here is my question. I do not see
moms putting their fingers on the nipple when latching. If anything I have
them place the fingers back behind the aerola area. This seems to give a
deeper latch. I have seen 4 moms within the last week during home visits and
this is what I did on each one. I also had them lean back and put the babies
in cradle positions. We had instant relief in each mom.

Maybe show the fingers back on the breast as the baby comes onto the
nipple?
Maybe also show the position in a cradle hold from a front view? Then the
dads (or partner) can also observe.

Just my thoughts on this. Your son is a very good artist. You should be
proud, Annette Leibovitz
