I teach newborn care classes at a local hospital. I've been showing
Delivery Self_Attachment in it and the families HATE the video. They
are very critical of it, saying the sample size was too small, the
study is too old, the medications aren't current, what difference
does it make if the baby can't crawl up the breast, etc.

Dear Friends:
Laura shares with us her classes skepticism about this fabulous film.
I wonder what these parents are really saying with their criticisms.
What doubts and fears and questions do they really have, that are being masked
by being picky about the study?
The sample size is adequate (36 in each group). The intervention was the
20-minute separation; there were medicated and non-medicated mothers in each
group. The medication most commonly used was Demerol (merperidine) that is
still used today. Crawling to the breast is not an essential; what is
essential is that mothers (and parents) realize that babies can feed themselves right
from birth, if the mother's body provides the baby with suppport against
gravity. The goal is to teach mothers that their job is to position, and that
baby's job is to latch.
There are other or more current films of self-attachment. The Johnson
and Johnson video "Amazing Talents of the Newborn" shows it. Ann-Marie
Widstrom's video "Baby's Choice" shows it. Sue Cox shows it in her recent film, whose
name escapes me at the moment.
Babies, mothers, and breastfeeding are as old as humanity. This study
shows what babies and mothers can do. Old as in timeless..... old as in
eternal......
