Ann, was the mother taking the herbs very long before starting the SNS?
Also, what was in the SNS? There could be some flavor to the milk from the
herbs. I am assuming that EBM is being used in the SNS but, if not, I would
suspect whatever is being used. Some kids would rather starve to death than
taste certain formulas. I wonder if mom could try finger feeding with one
tube of the SNS, while wearing it with the other tube taped to her breast.
If the baby would finger feed like that, it might be possible to remove the
finger and get the baby to latch onto the breast, after he/she was settled
down and wasn't too hungry any more. With the baby that old and still under
birthweight, as well as the fact that the baby has been refusing the breast,
I would think that, if he is willing to finger feed, it might be good to
just stick with that for a few days, before trying to do anything else. I
would suggest duplicating the breastfeeding experience, though, uncovering
the breast as for breastfeeding, wearing the SNS where the baby can see it,
holding him facing in to the breast, etc.. If he gets upset about being
held facing into the breast, though, mom could start out holding him in
whatever way he was happy with and then, after a few feeds, she could latch
him on to the finger in that position, but then start to slowly turn him
toward her body. I think it is most important, at this point, to get this
poor baby feeding well, in whatever manner possible. Has he ever fed well
with a bottle? One can also thread the SNS tube through the tight hole of a
wide-based bottle nipple, so that the nipple forms a seal around the hole
(if it is positioned right, baby will not suck any air). The baby can then
be given the bottle nipple and will get the milk from the SNS when he sucks.
He will feel like he is bottlefeeding but, with no bottle in the way, can
be held facing into the breast, duplicating the breastfeeding experience,
from the baby's perspective, in every way other than what he is actually
sucking on. I don't think this sounds like a prime case for that, and
suspect that a mom who was really set against bottles might prefer to finger
feed instead, but I thought I would bring it up, anyway. IME, many babies
will never give up fighting the breast, as long as they keep having negative
experiences with it. They can be taught to see breastfeeding in a positive
light, and willingly take it, but it tends to take some time and patience to
get to that point (feeding the baby in an alternate manner, as needed). Mom
needs to know that, and try not to put any pressure on the baby, or herself,
to get the process going quickly.

Best,
Darillyn

"Anybody had the experience of an already poor nurser who fusses at the
breast as is, getting worse after the mom took More Milk Plus (Fenugreek,
Blessed
Thistle, Fennel, Nettles) for 24 hours? The mom started using SNS
yesterday
after I saw her (though she was already using tube feeds from syringe) and
says that now baby was worse at the breast and refusing to feed. This is a
borderline FTT baby who is not near birthweight at 23 days. I am trying to
get
weight on asap, increase supply and honor mom's wishes to avoid bottles.
Thanks for any input, Ann"
