Baby was not willing to wake up and root, but would smack his lips a
little. And mom could easily hand express colostrum. I had her "drip feed"
baby at breast for 5 mins, at least hourly. Two hours and two drip feeds
later, the RN asked if baby fed yet. I explained. She said that's NOT a
feeding and insisted on doing another glucose check. It was 76! After
another drip feed, baby became proactive, latched and nursed. Diapers were
WNL.

Dear Friends:
I too have suggested this, where the mother can hand express newborn milk
and give those precious drops to her baby. Keeping the baby in the
restaurant, and mom doing this every hour until the baby wakes and latches has proved
to be a marvelous technique. The mother sees she has milk and learns that it
is important when the newborn milk keeps the baby's blood sugar high. If
coupled with s2s, the effect is magnified as the mother's body provides warmth
so the baby doesn't have to burn calories keeping warm.
The mother learns to handle her breasts, which is an important
foundation skill for breast self-examination.
The baby gets the right nourishment and the hospital staff is educated.
    A perfect win-win situation!
    warmly,
