Although copyright discussions are not on topic on Lactnet, we frequently
discuss news coverage and its impact on achieving our goal of supporting
breastfeeding.
I analyze news coverage for a living as part of the discipline of public
relations, and so I have spent considerable time contemplating copyright.
There is an aspect of US copyright law called "fair use." Many other
countries have a similar, but not identical concept, called "fair dealing"
The idea is that a work can be copied for criticism, comment, news
reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. One thing that sets apart the
US fair use clause is the framers of your constitution felt it important to
balance the need of the rightsholders to be compensated for their work with
the social benefits stemming from the debate of new ideas, scientific
discoveries, and artistic works.
It's a more complicated concept than what I have stated here. I would urge
all of you to have a passing familiarity with the concepts of fair use and
fair dealing, so that you may better understand when your use is a copyright
violation and when it falls within the category of fair use or fair dealing.
I used to keep a list of resources as long as my sleeve, but I recently
noticed that wikipedia's encyclopedia has an excellent summary for those who
are interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
