Our NICU is revising their policies regarding the use of kangaroo pumps

(continuous feeding pumps) and breastmilk. The questions center around
the
length of time that breastmilk could be at room temperature in the
feeding
pouch or "bag". Typically this is thawed breastmilk. Currently our
policy
indicates four hours. Do any NICUs use a longer time frame ? Would
anyone
be willing to share their policy information?

In response to this, there are guidelines from the American Dietetic
Association that state that breastmilk should hang for no more than 4
hours, but only 2-4 hours if added powdered fortifiers are used. The
reference is available on the ADA website: www.eatright.org HMBANA also
has an excellent resource for guidance on this.
