I have seen about 5 moms with an official diagnosis of PCOS. One of them
may have had serious milk supply issues -- hard to say, because she weaned
the night she went home ("that baby was *so hungry*" -- since that week I
have finally stopped trying to persuade moms the baby isn't really all that
hungry, and started to say "yes, he's hungry! That's what will guarantee
him his meals from here on out! He is supposed to be hungry, so he will
nurse a whole lot, so your milk will come in gangbusters! Just because
he's hungry now doesn't mean he'll still be hungry tomorrow! Quite the
reverse!"). I think she was on metformin. Another one definitely did not
get her milk in. I can't remember if she was on metformin. I watched the
others like a hawk. The others had adequate or plentiful milk. I don't
think any of them were on metformin. So, though I get a bit nervous when
the PCOS question gets a "yes", and especially if it has been bothersome
since adolescence, I don't think that medical treatment is always a
prerequisite to breastfeeding success.
