One reason for this "near starvation" is that many GB patients also have a
portion of their intestines removed.  Obviously, this diminishes their
ability to absorb nutrients from the now-limited amount of food they can
ingest.  I had no idea that was part of the surgery for many until my 25
year old stepdaughter had GB surgery.  I know that she has to be very
vigilant about eating well and taking supplements, and she isn't even
*contemplating* pregnancy at this point.

I can certainly see how a GB patient might have supply issues.  I have
already seen some signs of malnourishment in my stepdaughter at times when
she has been less than vigilant.  I am reading the posts in this thread
with great personal interest, knowing that she is planning to have
children in the next few years.  Thanks for discussing it here.
