This is very, very culturally coloured. I'm Dutch, but living in Germany. In Germany all movie and TV is synchronised/voice over/dubbed, in The Netherlands (practically) nothing is. If one would try a synchronised or voice-over video, Dutch watchers would be very distracted by the ''not-fitting voice'', as bad as German watchers would be by having to read undertitles. For Dutch watchers reading undertitles is an automatism, I think they combine hearing the original (mostly) english and reading the subs. I live in Germany for 5 years now and still am not used to hearing dr. Carter talk German ;-)

The one advantage to dubbing over subtitles is that the parents can 
concentrate on watching the action better if they are not reading 
subtitles. If we want them to watch the baby's mouth and the breast, 
reading will take away from their ability to do that.
