This was a challenge to me before I had dedicated LC hours and was working
as a staff nurse who did consults "when time was available". However, I did
spend time working with individual moms/babies in the course of my work as a
staff nurse on OB. Jotting them all down (3 minutes here, 20 minutes there
etc.) would have been a little overwhelming. What I did was to actually jot
down the time spent on breastfeeding help and bedside education for 10
working days. I then eliminated any days I felt were spent with far less
than average time on BF as well as those where I felt I spent far more than
average time on BF. I then took the rest and figured an "average time per
worked day" and multiplied it by the total number of days I worked in the
covered time period. While not a fully documented actual hours method, I
felt it did give a good representation. I made sure I was able to document
more than the required minimum hours to make u[p for any flaws in my system.
