Could you run a good video
repeatedly? I often envision a big room where moms can come and sit with

their babies and learn as a group about bf positions, latch, etc. In the

U.S. this is not culturally accepted.

Thanks Laurie for the ideas. Great minds think alike.

When I first started working, I realized that I could not get to all the
rooms, so I came up with the concept of a breastfeeding room where moms
would come for lectures, and could spend the day there learning to
breastfeed their babies. I wanted the room to be as unhospital-like as
it could be with comfortable chairs, etc. We do have a Video and I do
run films all day. I give a theoretical lecture every morning at 7:15
with dads, then all morning the moms come in and get help. I do jump
from one to another, and can never spend enough time with each one, but
I have them sit according to their specific problem: sore nipples under
the window, non-latching/sleepy babies over there, and weight loss, on
the other side. That way, moms can benefit from the help I give others
for the same problem. By the end of the day, most have gotten the
latch, those who have not have learned to hand express and feed their
babies with tiny plastic spoons, and will probably get it by the next
day. I suggest to the moms who really got the latch to help other moms
who wander in the room when I am not there.
I have also organized that one of the other LC's who teaches a course to
wannabees gives her course in my hospital and does clinicals, so that
provides more hands on help and gives future LC's amazing experience. I
then choose the best of the students to continue clinicals with me.
After 100 hours with me, they can come and work when I am not there and
this also provides more help, both for the students and the moms. We
meet once a month to discuss cases, and I am always available for them
if they have a problem when I am not there. These students are amazing
and will be super LC's. None of the students are nurses, but have
integrated really well in the staff.

< If you can't change the hospital culture, can moms come back in on day
3 or
4? Again, you could run a large clinic twice a week or so>

I just met with the administration of the hospital and we are trying to
get a clinic going. It will be a latch clinic which will allow moms to
come back until they "get it". Two days is just not enough.
