Briton Admits U.S. Baby Food Extortion Plot
Wed 1 Dec 2004

A 43-year-old man originally from Middlesbrough has pleaded guilty to trying
to extort 180,000 (£94,000) from a supermarket chain by threatening to put
tainted baby food products on store shelves, authorities said.

Dickinson was living with his family in the Venice area of Los Angeles on an
expired visa at the time of the extortion attempt. When authorities served a
search warrant in May at his home, Dickinson said he attempted to extort the
Ralphs supermarket chain to obtain money to pay for his five-month-old son's
college education.

Prosecutors said that Dickinson in late February sent a package to a Ralphs
corporate office in Compton containing four food products, including baby
food and formula, with a letter labelled "blackmail demand".

Tests on the food products sent to Ralphs revealed a container of Gerber
orange juice contained more than 50% hydraulic fluid. Boric acid was found
in a jar of horseradish and a container of Similac infant formula. A jar of
Gerber carrots also was found to contain glass shards.

No contaminated food products made their way into the food supply,
authorities said.
