Penny writes: "The neonatologist encouraged mom to pump and save every drop
and that it would make a difference, yet I am not able to rationalize for this
mom why this particular formula would be preferred over her breastmilk in
light of his incredible risks for both NEC and aspiration."

Penny, in my experience working as a staff nurse and LC in a level 3-4 NICU
I have never heard of Pregestimil being used for an asphyxiated baby over his
own mother's milk. These babies are often kept NPO for awhile until their
guts recover from the hypoxic insult but I've never heard of Pregestimil being
started instead of breastmilk. My instincts are the same as yours that
mother's own milk in very small amounts would be preferable to "test" the gut and
for bowel stimulation. Perhaps Nancy Wight can enlighten us.
