Lizabeth- Don't despair! Fingerfeeding and cupfeeding are both acceptable
alternative feeding methods that have been used for a number of years by
many breastfeeding professionals. As mentioned in some of the other posts,
they are part of our "toolbox" , as are shields, pumps, shells, etc. There
are frequently lively discussions about many of these tools and it seems as
though most of us have preferences (imagine that ! :) In my practice,
parents frequently prefer fingerfeeding over cup because they can master
the skills so readily. Sometimes it really helps Dad's to become part of
the struggle towards success! Personally, I don't think cupfeeding is
difficult, but I think it's sometimes scary to parents. As to the concern
about invading the oral space, I agree that we should try not to, but if
the alternative is a bottle nipple, I'm not too sure how it could be worse.
