One of the area hospitals that I work in has a Neonatoligist that refuses
to allow the babies she cares for to have their mothers milk if it
contains pain relievers such as Lortab, Percocet or Tylox. Another Neo in
the same hospital feels that it is okay. Does anyone else run into this
problem? How do you handle explaining to the mother that her baby won't
be getting that milk while in the unit? especially since the fact is if
she had the other Neo, her baby would be receiving it? My answer has been
to have the mother ask for written proof from the Neo that it is a risk,
but I have yet to come across a mother who does this.

Brenda Dalton RNC, IBCLC
