I have a Mom (gives permission to post) with flat nipples and is having
difficulties getting baby to latch. Baby is 7 days old. Has never latched without
nipple shield that Mom was given by hospital LC. Mom attempts to latch baby
without shield each time she nurses. Baby does well with shield. Mom
producing well. On day 6 post partum baby still had brick dust urine and dry lips so
she started pumping after each feeding and syringe feeding after that with
what baby would take. Baby urine changed to clear and baby seems satiated after
syringe feeding approx. 1/2 ounce after being at breast. My question is what
techniques can be used to help evert nipples. She has tried pumping before
feedings, wearing shells, manual manipulation. Baby has good suck after
latching. In addition, in your opinion what are her chances of ever being able to
nurse without shield? Is it necessary to continue to pump as long as shield is
utilized?
