I am only guessing, but I would imagine the caloric demands on her body to produce the milk are increased, much like if she were exercising instead of breastfeeding.

Just a thought,
Theresa

By more food, I meant more than the ADA reccomendations for diabetics (like
a 2000 cal or 2200 cal diet) The needs of the breastfeeding mother (500
extra cal a day is average, I think) to produce milk puts more food on the
diabetics plate than the diabetic is used to. There is usually a balance
between a diabetic's caloric intake and her insulin needs. The lactating
diabetic finds the opposite is true. ie: more calories, less insulin.

I don't know if the why is really understood. Why would a diabetic mom need
less insulin and more calories? It may have to do with hormonal interplay
of milk production, oxytocin and pitocin. Maybe there is an effect of
prolactin ? Anyone else know the reason? Thanks, Pat in SNJ
