Dear friends,

I communicated with some new moms recently for engorgement issues and feel a
bit frustrated.

There is popular treatment in hospitals for engorgement (and for plugged
ducts too) in our country as well as in the Russia. It consists of
expression of milk (as complete as possible) and then alcohol compress (70%
ethanol/water 1:1) is placed over the mom breast for 6 hours (over the
night). Does it seem dangerous for you? Sometimes camphora is used for these
compresses

Opponents state that alcohol can be absorbed and it gets into milk, it
blocks oxytocin release and can exacerbate situation. Also heat treatment
when mom has fever may speed up inflammation process.

As for me there are also dangers of not feeding the baby for long time.

Does anybody know about these practices? Is there some research about it,
whether it is good or bad?

I explain to mothers cabbage treatment/warmth before feeding/cold compresses
after and between feedings, but they listen to nurses who suppose this
treatment more readily

Sincerely yours,

Victoria Nesterova, breastfeeding supporter, mom to 3
