Janet Golden wrote a wonderful book, "A Social History of Wet Nursing in
America" and I know I've seen a similar British title, too...its a
wonderful explanation of this complicated social institution and the
parallels with the ascendancy of "medicine," the classism that accompanied
its demise, and the improvements in artificial infant milk.

RE:"I see clients who I know would make good wet nurses if that were still a
accepted occupation. When did it lose favor? I'm sure that it is still
practiced somewhere. And our present-day milk bank is a medicalized
continuation of the practice."
