NEWS RELEASE
Thursday, June 17, 2004

Montreal - Vitamin D deficiency rickets still exists in Canada - this
despite ready access to vitamin D and a clear recommendation by the Canadian
Paediatric Society (CPS) that all breast-fed infants receive a daily
supplement of oral vitamin D.

See link for rest of press release:
http://www.cps.ca/english/media/NewsReleases/RicketsNews.htm

A "handy" PDF Fact Sheet is provided:
http://www.cps.ca/english/CPSP/Studies/VitaminDFacts.pdf

"The disease is entirely preventable through such simple measures as
ensuring adequate dietary intake of vitamin D or adminstration of a daily
supplement."
also
"The Canadian Paediatric Society has recommended that all exclusively
breast-fed infants receive a daily supplement of oral vitamin D"

(Interesting timing, since Health Canada is currently in a "review period"
for Vitamin D requirements. What kind of politics or jockeying for position
is going on here????)
