And then no one on this list has mentioned transgenics. A company named
Genzyme based in Massachusetts splices human protein genes to goats and their
goats produce milk that "contains antibodies and other proteins to treat diseases
ranging from AIDS to arthritis." Of course, I believe that the human mammary
gland makes these kinds of antibodies directly. Transgenic goat's milk might
be thought of as similiar to human milk but then so could transgenic cow's
milk. It gives "just like mother's milk" a new meaning. This information is old
(about 4 years old) but can be seen at the following website:
http://www.mult-sclerosis.org/news/Dec2000/GoatsMedicineFactories.html

The mammary gland is one amazing medicine factory. The reasoning behind the
splicing of human protein genes (modeled after human milk components) to
goats/cows is that the human body tolerates human proteins better than goat or cow
proteins. Quite amazing that we can produce human proteins in various animal
milks and make them into medicines. Yet we have in our society so many
reasons why babies should not, cannot get these antibodies/proteins directly. The
debate about goat's milk and its closeness to human milk seems rather foolish.
Human being were meant to have human milk as babies. If they cannot or will
not be fed by their mothers, then they should be fed human milk from milk
banks.
