Our unit is in the process of rewriting our breast feeding policies (
standards of care) so that we can get all of our mother infant nurses up
to date and on the same page. At this point our policy states both side
feeds from the begining. I would like to start one side until finished,
ie. baby relaxes, fist unclenched, and then either offer the second side
or just stop. Has anyone instituted this practice? At this point babies
are to be brought out to their Mom every 3 hours, of course we encourage
rooming in but don't have a lot of Moms who do this. I would also like to
add no bathing until baby has nursed once. Currently, if the baby hasn't
been fed, he is bathed and not let out of the unit until his temp. is back
to normal. I would like to discourage this practice based on Ann Marie
Widstrom research showing that the babies mark the Mom's breast with the
amniotic fliud from the babies hands so they can smell it next time they
feed and that Moms keep their babies warm.
If anyone has polices (standards of care) that their hospital uses
and would like to share I would great appreciate the info.
                                Warmly,
                              Rachel Pfab RN, IBCLC
