I guess it depends on the reason....sometimes I recommend pumping prior to a
feed (briefly, to assist with a latch, get a milk flow, "take off the
foremilk") and sometimes I recommend the full treatment as carol suggests, and
sometimes a few minutes after (based on baby's gestational age, how well they are
latching and "emptying the breast." I kind of worry, like Jan pointed out, about
the smaller amounts obtained when pumping after a feed. But when the
differences between foremilk and hindmilk are explained, it makes sense to mom and dad.
