Best Start is, in fact, alive and well and doing some awesome work!
Their slogan now is "Loving support makes breastfeeding work".  (I don't
remember if that is different than it used to be.)  We recently had them
come for a workshop and planning session.  People were invited (and
came) from all over the state and from many different backgrounds for
it.  Best Start is going state by state (where invited!) and spends 2
days doing education, then needs assessment and planning for a statewide
breastfeeding promotion campaign.  We actually do the work, they just
lay the groundwork and give us a framework and act as consultants.  We
were the 11th state (I believe) to do this and some of the first ones
are already seeing some great results.  We are very excited here and
moving forward steadily.  It is already making a difference by uniting
all the different groups that have breastfeeding as a component or
interest. We even had someone from state government show up and she is
now actively participating! It's quite a networking enterprise and will
really pay off for the state, we believe.  If your state needs a shot in
the arm, you should inquire into this program.  I am betting it will
help turn things around here in (frigid!) Indiana!
