But the two (administration and moms quitting for hiccups) are absolutely
related. Would the hospital stand silently by if a mom said she had brought
along a home brew of goat's milk, brown sugar, and orange juice that she'd
be feeding her baby? Heck no. They'd waste no time explaining the risks to
her, and would strongly urge her to provide a more appropriate food
(actually, "strongly urge" is probably way too mild for what would happen).

Why is it inappropriate for a hospital to give information when a mother
says she's decided to increase her baby's morbidity and mortality risks
because her baby has hiccups?

I know it's old ground, but what about working on a release form laying out
the risks? *Just the ones in the AAP policy statement.* Why is that such a
hard step for a hospital to take? The AAP has already taken it in
publishing its statement. Heck, maybe just copy a few key parts of it word
for word and have parents sign that they've read it. Would a health
facility truly balk at such a move? With what justification? How could an
ethics committee say no?
