Jim McKenna gives a vivid description of research (done before there were
ethics committees) on normal babies whose airways were deliberately (and
briefly) occluded with a piece of saran wrap. They found it took 2 nurses
to hold the babies down.
(I have also heard him describe a conference at which there was discussion
of babies found dead "from overlying" in parental beds. Aware of the
vigorous reaction of normal babies to a threatened airway, someone asked,
"How do we know these babies weren't already dead?" He says there was
silence in the room. It had never occurred to any of them.)
