My second daughter was sitting by 6 months and I put food on her high chair
tray for her to either eat or to play with while the rest of us ate. It was
not pureed, but just mashed slightly with a fork.

She played with it and put it in her hair for some time. When she was 10
months old the Ped asked what she was eating. I told him that she did not
seem interested in eating even though food was available to her.

He asked to check her hemoglobin and called to say that it was still very
high and that she did not need solids for several more months. (One of the
knowing ones.)

Somewhere around a year she began to put the food into her mouth in small
quantities. She had "begun solid foods." She was always a "good" eater
since she was in charge of her intake and was nutritionally well fed.
